Learning Centre - Testimonials

Since the inception of the Learning Centre in May, 2008, we have been developing an engaging and appropriate education plan to meet the needs of the individuals who access this program here at Chrysalis. Our staff works very closely with each individual to find out what their goals are when they enter this program and we really develop a personalized plan to ensure we reach these goals. The potential for success is inside all of the individuals we serve in the Learning Centre; it?s up to the staff to really help our participants realize it themselves.

There are about 35 regular participants in the Learning Centre. A few from vocational Services and the rest are from our AES program.   The goal of each individual that accesses the Learning Centre is to learn the skills they will need in order to be successful in everyday life. Skills like reading, writing, proper hygiene, etc. Having this foundation of skills is something a lot of us take for granted on a day to day to day basis yet is so vital in the roles we hold in society. Providing a solid foundation for our individuals is the priority of this program. Watching our participants build their skill set so they can transfer what they have learned here into the community is something that is very special. We have seen a number of individuals who access the Learning Centre make significant improvements during their time in the program. So much so that we have heard a number of parents comment on what a difference they have noticed in their children thanks to the lessons they have learned at Chrysalis.

I?ve been very fortunate to be given the opportunity to work here at Chrysalis for the past five years. While the work we do is very challenging, it is extremely rewarding to get to work with our individuals and make a difference in the quality of their lives. Ensuring that we have quality programs and specialized plans for our participants is so important because the individuals whom we serve on a daily basis are the priority for front line staff. It?s very difficult knowing that there are so many people who cannot look past the disabilities our individuals have to see the gifts, abilities and talents they possess. Being able to establish programs like we have here at Chrysalis to showcase what our individuals can do is starting to change a lot of opinions regarding individuals with disabilities. Playing a small part in that process is something I am very proud of.

Yes, this work is challenging and I have been witness to some terrific moments, but the work I do for these individuals cannot compare to the impact they have made on my life. I?ve been enlightened through working here. The people we serve are my inspiration for getting up and coming to work. They have faced a number of challenges in their life time but they never complain about their situation, which is why I?ll never complain about mine. I certainly don?t have the right to complain about a long day at the office after seeing some of the ailments these individuals fight through every day. The lessons they have taught me have made me a better person and I?m happy to pass them on to my children in hopes that their lives will be touched the same way I have been.
