Learning Center Program


Rationale:

The vision of the learning Centre is to provide a stimulating, engaging and developmentally appropriate functional education program that will assist individuals with disabilities in the promotion of their physical, social, intellectual and emotional well-being to foster CHANGE, GROWTH and OPPORTUNITY.

The Learning Centre has been implementing this objective since it started May 2008. The program caters to all Chrysalis clients both from Alternative to Employment Services (AES) and Vocational Services.

The program can be accessed 5 days per week with 6 to 10 individuals benefiting each day.
Presently, the program is facilitated by two Community Disability Services Practitioner with an Education and Medical background.

Course Outline:

The Learning Center Program delivers the following learning areas and skills to each participant:

  • - Language and Writing
  • - Reading
  • - Functional Life Skills
  • - Science
  • - Culture and Society

 

Goals and Outcomes for each Participant

  • To learn how to write (basic lines, numbers, letters) pronounce simple words as well as to learn the meaning of words they use in their daily lives.
  • To appreciate and enjoy stories narrated to them in a variety of medium.
  • Examples:
    Narration using action and different range of voices
    Listening to taped stories.
  • To gain knowledge and skills in such areas as Health and Fitness, Nutrition,
    Grooming and Hygiene, Safety, Communication, Relationships, Activities of Daily Living, etc. to help them gain control of their lives, foster independence and eventually be integrated to the community/society.
  • For the individual to become aware of their own body and their environment as
    well as gain knowledge/insight on how changes in the environment and their own body affect their lives.
  • For the individual to become aware of the people and places around them and their roles in the community.

Reporting:

At the end of each learning day, the staff document each individual as well as group activities, skills, behavior and output in their respective communication book as well as the Learning Centre Progress Report Book. At the end of each month, the primary CDSP of each individual is required to complete and submit a monthly report to Program Team Leaders for review and placed within the individuals master files for successful achievement of the month.
