Employment Preparation Classes
 

Overview:

The employment preparation course is designed to provide skills to service individuals preparing for independent employment. Classroom instruction as well as practice will be part of the curriculum in order to maximize retention of information. The main focus is to reduce dependence on support workers and increase confidence so service individuals can job search independently.

The course will be about four weeks in length with specific classes varying in length (See sample schedule). One-on-one coaching is also available if required. Enrollment for the course will be about 6 individuals.

8. Resume and Cover Letter Development

9. Workplace Safety

 

Goals and Outcomes for Each Participant:

  • Each Employment Preparation class will be customized to each individual's specific needs.
  • To provide individuals with a job readiness portfolio for future reference. This will be customized for each individual it may be in written or pictorial form.
  • To create an updated, standardized teaching curriculum that is flexible.
  • Promote ownership of goals.
  • Increase the use of real and relevant activities and setting for learning.
  • Develop social skills.
  • Enhance communication and self advocacy skills.
  • Service individuals will develop confidence and increase the effectiveness of marketing of themselves when in job search.
  • They will prepare for work/volunteer situations through developing self-awareness of personal abilities and goals, and to practice steps necessary for acquiring employment such as networking, interviewing, communication and computer/literacy.

Collaboration

  • Looking at the target audience there will be transitions and links to other program areas such as learning centre for literacy and numeracy skills. Life Management for its emphasis on self esteem building. Culinary Arts participation for those individuals who want transitional life skills or preparing to move out independently.
  • Having joint meetings with the leaders of program areas to share their areas of expertise and how each area may benefit individuals. Also so that everyone is aware of individuals area of interest or further development in regards to individuals person centered plan.
  • Job Club for individuals to share learning and experience with job search.

Reporting

Each individual's progress will be monitored and documented while involved in the employment preparation classes through a job readiness checklist.
