Chrysalis - An Alberta Society for Citizens with Disabilities

Life Skills

Life Skills

Rationale:

The vision of the Life management program is to assist individuals with disabilities to engage in personal development training which will assist participants across a broad spectrum of daily life. This program serves as a more in depth bridge to the current Career and Life Management program currently being delivered in the secondary school system. Chrysalis has been successfully providing this program for a number of years at our main Edmonton location. The program is open to all Chrysalis individuals in addition to individuals being served by other area service providers.

Chrysalis is privileged to have on staff a Certified Life Management facilitator who is responsible for the teaching and oversight of the program. The program operates five days per week for a total of six weeks. In order to promote a conducive learning environment, enrollment in the program is limited to twelve participants with an average enrollment of ten people per class. Due to the nature and content of the program, it has been our experience that learners appreciate the smaller group dynamic as it promotes deeper engagement and participation.

Course Outline:

The Life Management Skills Course focuses on several aspects of life; these include and are not limited to:

  • Attending behaviors (listening skills)
  • Facing fears
  • Self-esteem
  • Assertiveness
  • Anger management
  • Goal setting
  • Stress management
  • Values
  • Helpful/harmful behaviors

Chrysalis also provides optional follow-up or maintenance support.  Follow-up support offers further assistance and addresses any questions or concerns arising from participation in the 6 week course.

It is important to note that some participants may choose at a later date to re-enroll in the program. For these participants we have found that remedial participation in the six week course has helped them to be more successful in their personal and community life.

"I've had a number of parents contact me overjoyed with the progress their child has made thanks to the life skills course. Speaking with the parents who notice these changes is always a blessing
because you get to
speak with them about maintaining the levels
of support their child needs in order to
continue growing once
the course is through."
